Paul, Network Engineer

In my earlier years...

Having left school at 16, I started my job life on what was then a Youth Training Scheme, working for an offshore supplier (providing oil rigs with equipment and supplies). This was only a temporary role designed to fill in time, as I joined the Army at 18 where I spent six glorious years running about all over the world as part of an infantry platoon before being transferred to the reconnaissance platoon.

It was during my reconnaissance posting that I had a first real taste of telecoms and IT related work. I was selected to be my section radio operator and attended a number of communication related courses run by the Royal Corps of Signals. There was plenty to learn and a variety of courses that needed to be passed. Thankfully I made the grade and enjoyed the rest of my Army career learning about communications.

How I got here…

Upon leaving the Army I began to focus more on becoming IT qualified. My first network related role was for Telewest Communications (now Virgin Media) back in 1999/2000 where I began my IT path on the travel service desk handling 1st line faults before moving into a 2nd line role.

Due to the range of different customer solutions Telewest had at the time – from dial up to frame relay networks and everything in between – my network exposure really took off. I ended my time with Virgin Media as part of the 24/7 team before moving into a data network engineer role within the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) based in London. This role allowed me to expand my knowledge further into encryption and satellite network solutions.

My next role was back with Virgin Media as a 3rd line network engineer, where I was responsible for high level fault escalations and network management. Prior to moving to IT Naturally, I worked for Thomas Cook as a network engineer, responsible for high level fault escalations and network management.

Why I like my job…

No days are ever the same. For last two years especially, I have been in an environment where I’ve learned different frameworks/domains/interesting architectures and have been faced with challenging problems. Each day I am presented with new challenges and situations, which demands that I stay focused.

What it’s like to work here…

It’s a unique experience. I am able to share in the birth, growth and success of this exciting company. I am surrounded by a team with a wealth of knowledge, who are all from different backgrounds across the IT sector. Exciting times indeed.
